Rapid Course Development
Interactive Video Using Captivate
Analysis
Technicians were having a difficult time passing audits for gas testing. Further investigation showed the technical documentation was often difficult to make sense of.
Design
The learning intervention was primarily made of videos showing precisely how to complete the process and meet the metrics tested by the audit. To assess understanding, I created a series of interactive videos that did not have them simply recall documentation but rather showed what they knew by going through the process itself.
Development
Video was captured showing the step-by-step of the process. I edited the video in Adobe Premiere, and then imported it into Captivate. The learner had to interact with the video to move the process forward.
Results
Learners passed audits at significantly higher rates, increasing the safety of the employees.
Gamification Using Lectora
Analysis
Service incidents were more frequent with newer employees due to poor site inspections. After a thorough audience analysis, it was determined that while they knew the rules, they had difficulty putting them into practice in the grey areas.
Design
The main focus of the design in this Lectora-built course was to have learners make decisions that played in the grey space and made the learner feel there was a risk involved.
Development
Using the custom variable manager, I created a gamification system that tracked the learner’s decisions. As they moved around the city observing different sites, they would earn or lose points based on their attention to detail.
Results
Incidents were reduced the following year and our client requested more of “training that was fun.”
Complex Interactions Using Storyline and JavaScript
Analysis
I was asked to turn black-and-white document-based training into scenario-based training where learners had to make decisions. New hires expressed difficulty putting the technical documentation into practice, and managers wanted to reduce the amount of shadowing time.
Design
The focus of the design was to have the learner experience what they were learning instead of passively taking it in using scenarios, characters, risk-reward systems, and simulations,
Development
The training was developed using Articulate Storyline to take advantage of its custom interactions. Simulations were custom made using Storyline’s variable manager. Call center branching scenarios utilized a JavaScript scoring system that tracked their responses and gave a custom report card with recommendations after each exercise. Note, the 4:3 aspect was a requirement of the LMS.
Results
In the end, the shadowing time needed for new call center employees to be proficient was reduced by 60%.
Efficient Design Using Rise
Introduction
As a lead designer at a large corporation, one of my responsibilities was to upskill existing and new designers. I am particularly passionate about teaching designers new tools. When the organization started investing in instructors doing design work, I was asked to build a workshop about Articulate Rise.
Development
I built a 15-minute course titled Planting Your First Flower that illustrated some basic principles of graphic design while showing most of the functionality of Articulate Rise. Students would rebuild this course during the workshop to learn how to use the tool.
Results
The instructors were able to build simple e-learning courses after the workshop.
